Our sustainability commitment
"Using more accurate carbon accounting calculations, we will continue to look at ways that we can stay on track to reach our sustainability targets"
- EOL sustainability working group
Throughout 2024, Editorial Office is committed to documenting our sustainability practices and positive environmental impact. We have a range of commitments, including halving our greenhouse gas emission before 2030 and achieving net zero carbon emission before 2050.
Read on to find out more about what we have achieved already and our future goals.
12 months of progress
Over a year ago, we were kickstarted in to thinking much more carefully about our sustainable practices, as well as calculating our business’ carbon emissions, when we received a sustainability questionnaire from a client.
Whilst we had always thought of ourselves as an environmentally friendly business, taking environmentally positive and responsible choices, it was a good opportunity to really stop and think about what we do and account for it.
Making a public commitment
In the second quarter of 2023, we undertook a number of more formal steps to formalise our sustainability commitments and future goals.
Firstly, we proposed an environmental policy to be written and shared.
We also signed up to the SME Climate Hub – “a non-profit global initiative that empowers small to medium sized companies to take climate action and build resilient businesses for the future.”
In line with the SME Climate Hub recommendations, Editorial Office Ltd signed a public commitment to:
- Halve our greenhouse gas emissions before 2030
- Achieve net zero emissions before 2050
In addition, we have also set Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and signed up to International Publishers Association – SDG Publishers’ Compact.
We have committed to achieving four SDG by 2030, including quality education, gender equality, reducing inequalities and responsible consumption and production.

Office initiatives
Throughout Q3 and Q4 of 2023, and into Q1 of 2024, our sustainability working group have also encouraged the use of particular office initiatives. Some of these have been in place for a very long time, but it was important for us to formally note what we are already doing, and encourage an increase in use, where feasible.
The current initiatives in place include:
- Recycling bins for paper, cans, plastic bottles, etc.
- No plastic cups, reusable mugs and glasses available instead.
- Water heater turned off, when office closed.
- Recycled toilet rolls.
- Ecofriendly cleaning products.
- Printer cartridge recycling.
We are also now moving over to:
- electronic payslips and P60s to save paper.
- a reduced number of inboxes, by creating shared accounts with multi-user access, reducing server space requirements.
Our continued sustainability commitments
We know there are areas where we can still improve. Using more accurate carbon accounting calculations, we continue to look at ways that we can stay on track to reach our target of halving our greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and achieving net zero emissions before 2050.
Sustainable practice and continued improvements.
Sustainable practices and reducing carbon emissions is important to us. We believe that it is everyone’s responsibility to play a part in looking for environmental positive actions to take, no matter how small.
As part of this commitment, we are staying accountable by writing more regular blogs and updates about our sustainable practices, so do check back for more updates a little later in the year.
